The book had been unavailable for years. The person who found it wrote about what he read and why parts of it still bother him.
I found this copy years after it had supposedly disappeared, and honestly I did not know what to expect. At first I assumed it was just some strange, forgotten book that had somehow gained a reputation over time.
But the more I read, the harder it became to treat it like something ordinary. There is something about the way it is written that feels unusually personal, almost like Henrik was trying to leave something behind rather than simply tell a story.
Some parts sounded so strange that I wanted to dismiss them, but then there would be a detail or a passage that felt too specific to ignore.
I still do not know what I believe about Henrik Fitzen, and I am not sure I am supposed to. What stayed with me was the feeling that he genuinely believed every word he was putting down.
By the time I finished it, I understood why people kept talking about the book long after it disappeared. I also understood why finding a copy felt less like buying an old book and more like coming across something that was never meant to be easy to find.
The First Book
No definitive explanation was ever given. Over time, three possibilities remained.
Henrik believed that certain people did not want the book to remain available.
No clear explanation was ever given for why it disappeared, and copies gradually became increasingly difficult to find.
There is another possibility.
Henrik may have withdrawn the book himself after becoming increasingly uncomfortable with how much he had revealed.
If that happened, he never publicly explained why.
Not long after the book disappeared, Henrik also withdrew from public view.
His posts stopped. His public presence faded. For years, almost nothing new appeared under his name.
Whether the disappearance of the book and Henrik’s silence were connected has never been clear.
Whatever happened, the book went out of sight. Henrik went with it.
A few rare copies are still out there somewhere. He came back on purpose.
Why He Came Back
Henrik did not return because he wanted attention. He did not return because he wanted to become known.
He returned because he believed there were things he could no longer trust himself to remember.
After the first book disappeared, he continued writing privately. Notes became pages. Pages became records. Eventually, those records became something he believed needed to exist somewhere outside his own memory.
I Had to Die Twice to Write This became his attempt to leave everything in one place before he could lose it again.
“The story needed to exist somewhere outside my own memory.”
